So, how do you find out your own ‘Interior Style’? Well, if (or when 😉) you work with me, one of the first things I will do is send you a questionnaire asking you a lot of questions! This enables me to find out as much as I can about you and your life, and therefore allowing me to help you achieve an Interior Style that reflects your lifestyle, likes and dislikes.
One of the questions I ask is, “What style are you drawn to?” And very often the answer I get is “I’m not sure?”
There are however a few ways to help you discover what your Interior Style is, and so I thought I’d share them with you.
The simplest one is……
LOOK AT YOUR WARDROBE STYLE
Do you have a certain style when it comes to your clothes? Are they classic, timeless, and unfussy? Or are they trendy? Or Colourful? Or Dark? Or Neutral? Write a list of words that describe your wardrobe and the outfits that you feel good in. Now if you were to apply these same words to an Interior scheme, how would that make you feel?
An example here is the first image is of a friends capsule wardrobe. Its very neutral with elements of interest in small amounts of animal print. I have been helping her with decorating her home over the last few years, and it follows a similar style. Both are neutral and classic in style with fun elements.
LOOK AT YOUR LIFESTYLE…
Think about how you live your life, and how you live in your home. There is no point thinking you want to live in a clean-lined, minimal, all white apartment, but in reality you have 3 kids, 2 dogs and love an outdoor lifestyle? For your Interior Style to work for you. It REALLY does have to WORK for you. Then, take the time to consider how you need it to work for you on a practical level, and how that may work on a visual and style basis.
EMBRACE IMAGES ON PINTEREST….
And on Instagram, and in magazines, and let yourself be drawn to images. Then take a moment to identify what it is in those images that has attracted you, and why? Is it the colours? Or the textures? How does it make you feel? Is it the style of the furniture? Or the architecture of the room? Do the answers align with your answers from the previous step?
DO YOUR OWN STYLE MOODBOARD.
Using all the information gathered in the previous steps, its time to compile a visual interpretation of your Interior Style! Print out your pinterest pictures, pull out the magazine images, get samples of the type of fabrics and wallpapers you like, and cut up paint charts. Hopefully at the end of it you should have a visual Road map of your style!
